How long is it? December 2013 was the last month that I made a post.

I am planning to be active again on 2017.

Cloud Surveillance or VSaaS ( Video Surveillance as a Service ) is basically a technology to manage, view, and record IP Cameras over the internet. There is no need for DVRs since everything is done on "cloud".

Long time ago we use analog cameras connected to VCRs and then to the DVRs. We have no choice but have a central connection. Now with IP cameras it is now possible to connect, view, and record it remotely.

Advantages of Cloud Surveillance:

1.  Cost Savings - You don't need to buy expensive NVR, Aircondition, electricity. Imagine the things you don't need to purchase. Also no maintenance cost.

2.  Storage Solution - Hard disk problems are eliminated.

3.  Easy Management. The idea is that this will be easier because hardwares to maintain are minimized.

4.  Minimize the cost of ownership.

The effect of Cloud Surveillance in security field remains to be seen. As always with any cloud technology there are also some disadvantages which will discussed with another article.

Some concerns with setting up cloud surveillance:

1. Compatibility. There are many IP Cameras in the market so the compatibility counts.

2. Frame rate. How many frames per second? If you don't want people moving in the video like robots.

3. Length of records. How many days of recording?

4. Cost of Cloud Surveillance.

Burglar alarm systems are security systems that uses door sensors, IR sensors, and other devices to monitor burglars. It has a control panel on the center and have a keypad. In the age of access controls and IP CCTV is there a place for burglar alarms?

Yes, there is. Although you not record visually the events like CCTV or control access to gates or doors, the burglar alarms has advantages also.

First it is cheaper than this two. Door and window sensors are dollar or two. IR Sensors at 10 USD. Control Panel and keypad around 100-300 USD,

Second it is easy to install. You just need a communication cable to connect different type of sensors. Then connect this to a Burglar alarm panel. The you need a bell or siren to alarm you.

Third, Burglar alarms are easy to operate. The idea is that when you go out of the house or go to sleep you you just to armed the keypad so that the sensor will be activated. When a burglar trips these sensors it will sound the alarm.

Now if you are already familiar with computers and networking you can use IP cameras.
IP cameras are easy to install and to configure specially if you will work with remote monitoring, The downside is the cost. The camera itself will cost around 200 to 500 USD depending on quality and brand. This is not including the network switch if you will buy more cameras and the computer itself.
But of course there are alternatives. One is use you motion detection. If you don't want to turn on your laptop always and you just want a passive monitoring. You can can combine this with email. You can configure the camera to email

I am thinking of putting a CCTV system for myself in my home. Of course I am  not a rich guy so the ideal system is affordable ( for me - with my salary  ehem ).

What I need to consider first is the size or area of my house. Then I need to consider how many security holes that I have. Like doors, windows, or any other way that a person can easily enter my house. Then I need to consider the level of security that I want. Do I need to monitor every activity? Do I need to monitor all the person and what they do?

In my case I just want to monitor who goes in and out the door and recorded video of who passes the windows during burglary.

I remember visiting one of my old client many years ago. The thief penetrated to his house by cutting a thick steel bar gate. Passive security does not work properly nowadays.

Back to topic.

Analog or IP. Here we go again. It is really cheap to buy a simple analog and run to your own TV. Then turn it on when you want to check a place in your house. A very cheap solution not utilized by many homeowners. This one camera is better than you going down and take the risk. A four ca,era with DVR will be around 400 to 1000 USD which is not bad at all also. Contrary to what others say, this systems are pretty stable.

Another thing you can do is IP.

SCID is a free chess database application developed by Shane Hudson. For weeks I am looking for the right software for ubuntu linux that have chess training ( I like you to know I'm not that good in chess it just happened that I love the game). This is part of my research to look for games for Ubuntu.

As usual it is easy to install in Ubuntu just look at the Ubuntu software center and install it. Running it is another matter. You need to run the command on the terminal. ( Looking for a solution on this.) In general the view is simple, it is easy to use.

To take full use of its capability you need to load the Stockfish UCI engine. Go to Tools> Analysis Engine > New> Name > Direct to where is your UCI.

I will keep on updating this whenever I learned something from SCID.

BNC Crimping is one of the basics of CCTV installation. I found this video in youtube courtesy to the uploader SuperKblackman.

This  morning I started to make a concept diagram regarding a security system to someone. A friend of mine advised me to use Visio instead a CAD software that I usually use.

I'm not an expert user for this software so it takes me a while to find my way into it. First it I cannot find the right stencil for the security system I am designing.
So I decided to make my own. It is quite easy just go to and find create stencil.
You need to make a new master. Then draw your design and save it. Do the same for all the new equipments ( not available symbols ) that you need.ty

Anyone knows where I can find Security Systems template or tencil please post on the comments.
